As I read through Joshua 1 today, the question came—How do we normally define success and how is it achieved? Is success measured in the amount of money and wealth we have accumulated? Is success measured in the title we carry at work? Is success measured in our happiness?
As Joshua was getting ready to lead the people into the Promised Land, God spoke to him about success and how it is achieved.
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. (Joshua 1:8-9)”
Success and Prosperity are not achieved by cutting ethical corners, or working in our own strength or wisdom. Nor is it achieved by following the way of the world in its practices. To surrender to and follow Jesus Christ will immediately put us on a path that is very different than how the world defines success and prosperity. The temptation we face will be to look to our right and left in order to find success, but it is found in keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ and following Him whether at home, at work, at the voting booth, on vacation, or wherever we may be.
Hearing Him speak to us through His word and obeying His commands will bring us success and prosperity the way God defines it and not by how the world may define it. Success God’s way is everlasting and is not temporal. How set are we on going after the success God desires to bring us as we learn to meditate on His word?
